EXTRA FORBIDDEN
Responsible for causing great suffering in the world and the deaths and maiming of hundreds of millions of people in the 20th century, fascism and communism left their mark on film as well. Whereas film-makers have played an important role in exposing the crimes of Nazism and making people aware of the Holocaust, that has not been the case with communism.. Overall, there have been too few films about the crimes perpetrated by communist regimes. The lack of attention to the red terror has been attributed to the left-wing sentiment prevalent in Hollywood, Western naiveté and ignorance of the atrocities committed behind the Iron Curtain. In certain periods such as in the Reagan era, when films critical of the communist system did reach the big screen, they were usually roundly panned by Western intellectuals. In the Soviet Union, films of this nature were in an extra forbidden category. A number of them were so illegal that they could not even be shown in neighboring countries such as Finland. This program was assembled from such super forbidden films. Action films--the Bonds, Rambos and Rockys—that only superficially treated the communist system were intentionally left out. Despite the criticism they received, the films in the ”most forbidden” category left an indelible impression on film history. Steven Jay Schneider’s "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" lists nearly half of the following nine motion pictures. 1984 (1956) 1984 (1984) ANIMAL FARM ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE INTERROGATON / PRZESLUŠANIJE RED DAWN ELENI BORN AMERICAN MAN OF MARBLE / CZLOWIEK Z MARMURU MAN OF IRON / CZLOWIEK Z ZELAZA
